Potatoes: A Good Source of Potassium

Did you know that potatoes contain lots of potassium?  This mineral is important because it is necessary for the body to have adequate amounts of it so that it can help muscles when they contract and assist in keeping fluid levels at their correct balance.  Potassium is also necessary to keep a human heart beating at the proper rhythm.

The potassium that is contained in a single potato is equal to and often exceeds the potassium that is contained in a banana.  People could not survive without the proper levels of this mineral in their body.

The basic potato is not quite as simple as most people might think.  It comes in many different varieties and colors.  For instance there are brown, yellow, and white potatoes.  These small food wonders contain so many vitamins and minerals that you can consider them a health food.

It is imperative that the human body be able to convert glucose into energy.  It is this process that potassium through the consumption of potatoes helps to facilitate.  Once the energy is created it stored in the liver and muscles.

Most people believe that most of the nutrients of the potato are contained in the potato skin.  This is not true.  Most are not contained in the skin but in the potato itself.  But if you want 100% of the nutrients then it would be better to leave the skin on the potato when cooking it.

A slow cooker potato soup recipe will allow you to enjoy the health aspects of a potato while not just consuming a basic spud.  There are many potato recipes that are available for free on the internet.

No matter what recipe you choose or what variety of potato you use in the recipe, you can be assured that you will be eating a very healthy food that tastes great.
