How to Become a Chef

Are you interested in how to become a chef?  The culinary business has had little if no change through the recent recession.  No matter how bad the economy is people must eat.  The outlook for the food industry is fairly stable.  By the year 2018 the US Dept. of Labor predicts a rise of 6%.  (See http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos330.htm)

So how do you become a chef?  The requirements to become a chef are not the same for everyone.  There are two different ways to get into this career.  You can either go to school to be a chef or work your way up in a restaurant.

First, you may want to try to work in a professional kitchen.  See how it operates.  Work the long hard hours.  Experience the pressure of having to get the orders out in a timely manner.  Talk to a few chefs and few professional cooks.  Get some advice and build a network.

Second, look for a culinary school.  Start looking for a culinary school in your area.  A culinary school can offer you a quality education when it comes to learning the craft.  Most of their teachers are certified chefs with the ACF (American Culinary Federation).  Some culinary schools have a restaurant nearby where you can gain valuable experience.

If there are no culinary schools in your area check with some of the local colleges, especially junior and community colleges.  They may offer a one year certificate or a 2 year associate degree.  You may want to opt for a four year bachelor degree.  A bachelor in culinary arts will give you a strong training in the business aspect of culinary management.

A certificate and a college degree are not really required to become a chef. You could start off as an entry level prep cook, then move your way up to a chef.  Many chefs have earned their title of chef.  A degree and other certifications obtained through the American Culinary Federation (ACF) can prepare you for higher paying jobs.

Last, you need to develop a drive for achievement.  Be willing to work long hours in strenuous conditions.  The kitchen is a fast paced and stressful environment.  You have to push your orders out correct and quickly, making sure the plates of food are well presented.  At the same time, you must make sure every member of the kitchen staff is following ServSafe and state safety guidelines so that your guests can have a delicious and safe meal.

So are you willing to step up to the challenge of becoming a chef?  If so contact your local colleges that offer a culinary program.  Tell them you would like to become a chef!

Good luck.
